Text: 1 Samuel 14:24-46, James 3:2
1 Samuel 14: 24-35
battle shifted to Beth Aven.
24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had placed the people under oath, saying, "Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies." So none of the people tasted food. 25 Now all the people of the land came to a forest; and there was honey on the ground. 26 And when the people had come into the woods, there was the honey, dripping; but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath; therefore he stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his countenance brightened. 28 Then one of the people said, "Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, 'Cursed is the man who eats food this day.' " And the people were faint. 29 But Jonathan said, "My father has troubled the land. Look now, how my countenance has brightened because I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now would there not have been a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?" 31 Now they had driven back the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. So the people were very faint. 32 And the people rushed on the spoil, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood. 33 Then they told Saul, saying, "Look, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood!" So he said, "You have dealt treacherously; roll a large stone to me this day." 34 And Saul said, "Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, 'Bring me here every man's ox and every man's sheep, slaughter them here, and eat; and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.' " So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night, and slaughtered it there. 35 Then Saul built an altar to the Lord. This was the first altar that he built to the Lord.
James 3:2
For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. (NKJV)
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. (KJV)
Saul used his mouth to get his army into a difficult, uncomfortable and inconvenient situation. This reduced their capacity to achieve as much as they would have achieved if he had not spoken rashly
Reflecting on the power of words and prayers to bridle (control carefully) our tongue.
Jesus used words formed by His tongue to:
· Raise the dead - Jarius' daughter in Luke 8:40-56 and the Widow of Nain's son in Luke 7:11-17
· Heal the sick - Matthew 4:23-25, 8:16-17.
· Create the world - John 1:1-5, Hebrews 11.
The tongue can also be used to:
· Accuse others - Acts 24:1-9, Revelation 12:9-11,
· Curse people - 1 Samuel 17
· Destroy good things.
· Kill – make the living to die.
· Report oneself and bring down wrathful judgement - 2 Samuel 1:10
May your tongue not work against you in the name of Jesus.
What is a bridle? What is it used for?
The bridle keeps the horse in check, instructs it on when to move, when to stop, speed, go slowly, turn to the right or left etc.
The Bible says that the power of life and death are in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).
Jesus said that the words He has spoken to us are spirit and are life (John 6:63).
Note:
1. To speak life with our tongue, our hearts must be renewed to speak life, since the mouth speaks from the abundance of the words and thoughts of our hearts.
The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart; and the [intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil [in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart. (Luke 6:45).
May your mouth and tongue always speak life and not death in the name of Jesus.
2. Only God can renew our hearts. That is why we need to call on God today.
In Ezekiel 36:26-27, the Bible says:
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
This is important as every person thinks they are right in his or her own heart.
May God renew your heart and take out of your life a stony heart in the name of Jesus.
3. Allow the word of God to dwell in you richly by dedicating a set time to read and study your Bible. This is key to having and maintaining a renewed heart that speaks life.
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
May the word of God dwell in you richly in the name of Jesus.
4. Guard your tongue and your mouth.
Proverbs 13:3 – He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.
Pray: My tongue, my mouth, you will not destroy me, my life will be preserved in glory and honor in the name of Jesus.
Receive the grace to guard your mouth, preserve your life in the name of Jesus.
Your tongue and mouth will not bring destruction to your life, family, and destiny in the name of Jesus.
5. Let your words minister grace.
Your speech must always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. (Colossians 4:6)
Someone said - You can change your world by changing your words... Remember, death and life are in the power of the tongue.
Changing the output of your tongue begins with a change in the heart. Jesus said, "But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man." Matt 15:18 (HCSB). The heart influences the tongue.
