The King of Glory – Part 2 – Mercy

Prayers

1.       Father show me and my family your mercy in the name of Jesus.

2.       Father let the mercy available at your throne of grace avail for me and mine in Jesus name.

3.       Lord of mercy be merciful to me in every area of my life in Jesus mighty name.

Who is a king?

The oxford dictionary defines a king as ruler, sovereign, monarch, supreme ruler, crowned head, majesty, Crown, head of state, royal personage, emperor, prince, potentate, overlord, liege lord, lord, leader and chief. A person or thing regarded as the finest or most important in their sphere or group.

Here we are also talking about the King of the earth, King of heaven, the King of kings and Lord of Lords.

Psalm 47:6-7 6Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! 7For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding.

1 Chronicles 29:11-12: Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone.

What is Glory?

Glory is defined as shining beauty. Synonyms include: magnificence, splendor, resplendence, grandeur, majesty, greatness,  impressiveness,  gloriousness, nobility, pomp, stateliness, sumptuousness,  opulence,  beauty, elegance, brilliance,  gorgeousness, splendidness, wonder,  delight,  wonderful thing, glorious thing,  marvel, phenomenon,  sight and spectacle.

What is Mercy?

The synonyms of mercy include forgiveness, benevolence, kindness, sympathy, compassion, humanity.

May God show you His forgiveness in Jesus name!

May you see and continue to see the kindness of God in the land of the living in Jesus name.

The sympathy of God will deliver you from every difficult, stubborn and unyielding problem in Jesus name.

The Compassion of God will make a way for you in Jesus mighty name.

The benevolence of God, His desire to do kind things to you and yours, His disposition to do good will lift you up above your adversaries, silence every tongue waging against you and raise you above your detractors in Jesus mighty name.

The mercy of the King of glory also demonstrates how majestic and glorious God is. My prayer is that He will be glorious in your life and family in Jesus name.

What are the implications of the King of Glory as a Merciful God?

1.       We obtain our identity through mercy: In 1 Peter 2:10 the Bible says - “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” This has serious implications, that those who are not God’s people have no identity in heaven. Their names are not in the citizenship register of heaven (Also refer to Philippians 3:20, John 8:44).

2.       Mercy is only available through Jesus Christ, God the Son. 1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world (NIV). He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world (ESV).

Romans 3:25 whom God put forward as a propitiation (sacrifice) by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

For someone here, God says I should tell you that the way is now clear before you. Amen

3.       Our situations do not catch Him by surprise: He was tempted in all points and able to succour, understand, uphold and comfort those being tempted.

4.       Mercy could be general or specific.  You need your specific mercy to transform your life as we saw in the case of Blind Bartimaeus. Be specific in your request for mercy.

5.       Mercy is transforming.  Divine mercy is a transformer. We saw its transformative power on Jacob who was turned to Israel.  We saw its impact on Jonah and on the inhabitants of Nineveh.

6.       Mercy received can be lost if not passed on to others, as seen in the parable of the wicked servant. That is why it is important to show mercy to others to also qualify for mercy.

7.       God's mercy cannot be exhausted because He is rich in mercy. Ephesians 2: 4But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved! 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8.       Gods mercy has no end. His mercy is everlasting.  This does not mean that we should take His mercies for granted. While God and His mercy is eternal and everlasting, man's days on earth are numbered, therefore the possible season for applying God's mercy on earth is limited to the time spent on earth (present mercy).  There will then be a transformation into eternal mercy which lasts forever for those who have applied the mercy here on earth. Apply the present mercy so eternal mercy can be applied to you.

9.       God is selective on whom He has mercy on. This is why you should not despise or take for granted God’s mercy when it is offered to you.

Romans 9: 11Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad, in order that God’s plan of election might stand, 12not by works but by Him who calls, she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13So it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” 14What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Certainly not! 15For He says to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to harden.

Some heard the gospel when you heard it but are not saved. God chose to save you through His sovereign choice and election. This is one of the reasons why you should hold onto your salvation with fear and trembling and be totally obedient to God.

Philippians 2:12: Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear (NLT).

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (ESV)

Many choices were made on your behalf. By who? Who chose your parents? Who chose where you will be born? Who chose the color of your skin and how tall you will be? Who determined the number of hairs on your head? Don’t take His offer of mercy to be saved through the sacrifice of Jesus for granted. If you are yet to be saved, run to the cross now, confess your sins, and ask Jesus to become your Lord and savior.

10.   The dayspring from heaven came to show us mercy: Luke 1: 76 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, 77 To give knowledge of salvation to His people. By the remission of their sins, 78 Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; 79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

What should I do to qualify for God’s mercy?

1.       Lay hold on mercy, through present mercy and especially the mercy of eternal life. Don’t let it pass you by.

2.       Be merciful: James 2:13 - There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you. Refer to the parable of the unmerciful servant in Matthew 18:21-35, the servant had received forgiveness and had been discharged and acquitted, but because he refused to forgive after receiving mercy, he lost the forgiveness and mercy he had received and went into the bonds he had previously escaped. Be merciful and forgive.

3.       Be saved: Ask Jesus Christ to become your Lord and savior. That is why Jesus came to the world and we are celebrating Christmas in this season. He came for you. Do not let His coming be in vain over your life. (John 3:16, 3:36 - Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them.)

4.       Keep yourself in God’s love through obedience and walking with Him in a close relationship. Jude 1:21 - keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.

May God keep us in the present mercy and lead us into eternal mercy in Jesus name in Jesus name.
