Text: John 11:1-11 The Death of Lazarus 1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” 4When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was. 7Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?” 9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”
A certain man was sick named Lazarus from the city of Bethany. Lazarus means God helpeth, a person who God helps, yet he became sick. Sick means to be weak, impotent, weakening or fast sinking.
What can we learn from the story before we pray? (1) The fact that God is with you and helping you does not mean a person cannot fall sick or face challenges.
(2) Bethany means house of welcome or house of figs. Figs represent fruitfulness, wealth and prosperity. Lazarus lived in a land of fruitfulness, wealth and prosperity, yet he became sick. This shows that where a person lives is not an insurance against sickness. Fruitfulness, Wealth and prosperity are not protections against sickness and even death.
(3) in verse 2, Mary whose brother Lazarus was sick was the one who anointed Jesus and washed His feet with her hair. Service to God and sacrifices made for God may not prevent sickness or afflictions coming upon a person's loved ones. However, we have the assurance in Ex 23:25 that God will take the sicknesses and afflictions away. And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.
(4) in verse 4 we were informed that Jesus loved Lazarus, yet Lazarus became sick and died from the sickness. Going through sickness or afflictions is not necessarily an indication that God does not love you. Instead, God loves you and continues to love you even in that situation.
(5) The sisters of Lazarus reported the situation to Jesus. Tell God about your troubling situations and the situation of your loved ones.
(6) Afflictions does not mean God does not love your family. In verse 5, the Bible says that Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus, notwithstanding the family went through very trying times with tears, pain, heartaches, caring for a loved one who was sick. The tasking care did not appear to yield positive results as the person they cared for later died despite their best efforts. Gods love stands.
(7) That God did not respond immediately you cried out to Him or is yet to respond does not mean He did not hear you or that He will not respond. In verse 6, Jesus stayed 2 more days where He was before going to Bethany.
(8.) Jesus was ready to go to any length even at the risk of harm to Himself or even death to bring deliverance to Lazarus and meet the needs of the family. As recorded in verses 8-16.
(9). The situation was to bring glory to God and it did bring glory to God. Your life and situation will bring glory to God in Jesus name.
(10) Mary and Martha had faith that their brother would rise again and that Jesus could raise him (v21-32). Have faith that Jesus can attend to your case because He is the resurrection and the life v25. Also Jesus said if you believe you will see the glory of God v39.
(11) Jesus instructed that they take away the stone covering the grave to enable Lazarus receive his miracle in v39. Every stone of hindrance to your miracle will be taken away in Jesus name.
(12) Lazarus did not stink despite his condition. He was either not allowed to decay or the decay was reversed. You will not stink. Your situation will not decay and every decaying or decadent situation will be reversed in Jesus name.
(13) Jesus called Lazarus to come out of the grave. It was a call to come out from the dead and join the living, it was a second phase, second chance, second lease of life. Jesus shouted in verses 43 to 44 Lazarus come forth! And he came forth. You hear the voice of God, your organs and situations will hear the voice of the son of God and live. You will go forth and thrive. Jesus said loose him and let him go. You are loosed from every bondage and advance into newness of life in Jesus name.
